From Prescription to Addiction
Prescription drug abuse among teenagers has become a national health concern, placing our youth at an alarming risk of addiction, dependence on more dangerous drugs like heroin, and potential overdose.

Today, opioids, sedatives, stimulants and tranquilizers are gateways to drug overuse and addiction. For many teens, the road to addiction starts with medications prescribed by their dentist or doctor for legitimate health concerns, or with prescription drugs belonging to family members. When the drugs are inappropriately or over used, it can lead to dependency, triggering extreme and illegal behaviors to replenish their supply. In some cases, their addiction may lead to the use of less expensive and more readily available illegal drugs such as heroin.

Protecting our youth starts with improving our understanding of the causes and challenges of prescription drug abuse. Amid today’s growing volume of data on the topic, two key findings reflect our experience here at the Center: the vast majority of substance-use disorders develop before age 18; and traumatic childhood experiences, mental illness and economic insecurity are significant predictors of future substance abuse.

To learn more, join us as Dr. Annette B. Santamaria, PhD, MPH, DABT, presents an overview of this critical topic and the public health concerns associated with prescription drug abuse, particularly among teens.
